‘Inspiring Women of Glens Falls’ book effort on pace for October

By Cathy DeDe, Chronicle Managing Editor

Harriet Rogers, a 1940 Glens Falls High School grad who joined the Coast Guard at the start of World War II and played a role in D-Day planning, is one of the Historical figures in the ‘Inspiring Women’ book. Her typing skills led her to help transmit confidential high-level orders including for D-Day, the Allied Invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944.
Inspiring Women of Glens Falls, the new book planned by organizers Elizabeth Little Hogan and Diana Palmer, is on track for October release.

Created by a team of 35 local volunteer writers, editors and illustrators, the workbook-size publication profiles notable women of the Glens Falls area, past and present. The target audience is middle school students and classrooms, “but so far adults have loved the teaser,” Ms. Hogan tells The Chronicle, “so really it’s for everyone.”

All but three of the planned 75 profiles have been written, Ms. Hogan says.

Thirty have “made it through” Rhonda Triller’s editing, and about 25 also have sketches and illustrations completed by artist Rhianna Hogan-Cerro.

“We just reworked the teaser and had 100 printed that will be distributed to middle school girls at the American Association of University Women’s STEM day for girls,” coming up at SUNY Adirondack, Ms. Hogan said.

Work progresses also on the sample teacher’s companion, just shared with Glens Falls Middle School librarians and ELA teachers for feedback.

Ms. Little Hogan said, “Right now it’s a lot of back and forth with the editing process between Rhonda and me, and then Diana Palmer or I have discussions with the author. Basically, lots of talking, in part because there are so many authors involved.”

They raised over $20,000 to fund the project, Ms. Hogan said. “We’re all set.”
