We’ll be offering nail services for kids ages 4 and up. Adults are welcome, too, even without kids — as long as they don’t mind that their neighbor might be little and friendly,” Stephanie Guzik-Lendrum tells The Chronicle about Blush Mini Spa, her new business targeting a May opening in the Colvin Building on Glen Street downtown.
“But I haven’t found the best location for that, nor have I found it to be safe or sanitary to my liking,” she said. “So I’m going to be taking on those responsibilities. I have a background in lab research, and I’m serious about the presence of germs and how to sterilize tools properly. I’ve created a standard practice for us to keep our equipment clean that exceeds requirements,” said Ms. Guzik-Lendrum.
The 2001 Queensbury grad earned her bachelor’s degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and then her Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina in cell and development biology.
Her hand-made ornament business Cedar + Pearl in Glens Falls was the subject of a Chronicle story in December.
At Blush Mini Spa she said they’ll use non-toxic polish. “It’s free of 21 of the common chemicals found in nail polishes, so you can feel better about getting nail services done, even on kids’ developing nails.”
“I have spoken at length with many members of the Glens Falls community and surrounding towns, mothers and women especially, who are very excited at the opportunity to have this available,” she said.
“Many of them have commented how nice it will be to have an opportunity to spend more time downtown in conjunction with a visit to the library, or a visit to get coffee with friends, or even to go down to the hockey games.”
“I suspect that it’ll be a good draw for tourists, because a lot of people coming from the city are expecting something like this available, and it’s not available in our region,” she added.
Ms. Guzik-Lendrum said, “We’re still going for a relaxing spa atmosphere, which will help our littlest customers learn spa etiquette, but in a friendly environment where they’re still welcome to be themselves.”
She’s leasing two floors of the Colvin Building for the salon. The ground floor, previously a consignment clothing shop, will have manicure and pedicure stations, a retail area and a welcome desk.
Upstairs, previously a yoga studio and a nail specialty studio, will be used primarily for birthday parties, bridal and baby showers and other small gatherings, Mrs. Guzik-Lendrum said.
“These will be a chance to relax and spend time with friends — a very different feel than most birthday party options in our area. We have a lounge area for hanging out, fun craft activities, selfie stations, and select nail services during parties. Relaxing party packages will be available for small groups of adults as well. We hope to offer these parties starting later in May.”
Mrs. Guzik-Lendrum said the street-level floor “needed a refreshing of the paint and also had some worn out carpeting, so we’re going to be refreshing both of those to brighten it up and welcome people in.”
Upstairs “I’m really not doing anything to change that space physically, just freshening up the paint,” she said.
Mrs. Guzik-Lendrum said she aims to have an invite-only soft open this month, and fully open the salon in May.
Her Cedar + Pearl ornament business is “thriving” she said. The retail shop is located in the Shirt Factory, Glens Falls. She moved the manufacturing side of the business across Lawrence Street to the Grey Ghost building.
