Deric Buck, who operates Bay Meadows, will buy Kingswood Golf in Hudson Falls

By Gordon Woodworth, Chronicle News Editor

Deric Buck, in his fourth year of operating Bay Meadows Golf Club and Bogey’s restaurant in Queensbury, is buying Kingswood Golf Club in Hudson Falls, The Chronicle has learned.

“We have signed a contract,” Mr. Buck confirmed Tuesday. “The tentative closing is in October.”

Peter Shabat, who owns both Bay Meadows and Kingswood, said, “It’s going to happen” when asked about the deal. He said the sale price is “less than $2-million” and “I’m holding the paper.”

Mr. Buck said he is reluctant to detail his plans out of respect for Mike Woodbury, who designed and built the course and now leases it from Mr. Shabat.

But Mr. Buck did say, “We are going to reconfigure the clubhouse and make a full-service, year-round restaurant that will have 50 to 60 seats.

“And we’re going to get sand, truckloads and truckloads of sand, and replace the sand in the sand traps immediately.”

Mr. Buck said, “I’m excited. I’ve worked hard to make this happen, and I really believe I can do a really good job over there.

“It’s a great golf course with great members. I can’t wait to get started.”

Mr. Shabat bought Kingswood in 2010 for $1.35-million. He bought Bay Meadows in January 2007 for $615,000.

Kingswood covers 175 acres of former farmland with views of Vermont’s Green Mountains. Mr. Woodbury built the course in 1991 after he and his brother, the late Ralph “Skeets” Woodbury, sold their nine Woodbury Lumber stores.
